Gino Strada
TL;DR: The war surgeon who treated victims on both sides of the front line.
A Radical Idea
Gino Strada was an Italian war surgeon who believed that high-quality healthcare was a fundamental human right, not a luxury. He founded the NGO 'Emergency' with a radical principle: they would build hospitals in war zones that were cleaner and better equipped than hospitals in Europe, and they would treat everyone for free: civilians, soldiers, and even enemy combatants.
No Weapons Allowed
Gino worked in the most dangerous places on earth: Rwanda during the genocide, Afghanistan under the Taliban, and Sudan. He strictly enforced a 'No Weapons' policy in his hospitals. He famously treated Taliban fighters in beds next to the victims of their attacks. When criticized, he simply said, 'I am a doctor. If you are wounded, I fix you. That is all.'
30,000 Surgeries
Over his career, Gino Strada personally performed over 30,000 surgeries. His organization has treated over 11 million people. He passed away in 2021, but his hospitals remain as sanctuaries of peace in lands of war. He proved that even in the midst of humanity's worst violence, compassion can still exist.
The World Without Him
Without Gino Strada, 11 million people in the world's most war-torn regions would have been left with substandard care or none at all. Countless amputees, bullet wound victims, and cardiac patients would have died. Perhaps more importantly, he proved that neutrality and humanity can exist in a war zone, challenging the very logic of conflict by treating enemies as equals.
